Be A Responsible Owner – Questions To Ask A Breeder

QUESTIONS TO ASK A BREEDER

  • What health testing has been done on the parents? You can ask to see results

Note: French Bulldog National Club recommended health testing on Hips, Patella, Heart, Trachea, Thyroid, eye CERF, DNA testing for Cystinuria Type 3 and Juvenile Cataracts

  • Ask to see pictures of the parents, their CKC registration paper and pedigree. Make sure the dam is registered in the name of the breeder with correct colour

  • Ask to see a copy of the CKC litter application and make sure the dogs are the parent of the litter. Make sure the contract provided details on registration of both parent, litter application number, details on health guarantee and what’s covered

Note: According to the Agriculture Canada’s Animal Pedigree Act, all puppies must be registered with the CKC in order to advertise to sell the puppies as ‘Purebred’. The breeder must provide the CKC registration of the puppy within 6 months. Any breeders insist registration is irrelevant, run away…

  • Upon receipt of the CKC registration paper, make sure all information, sire, dam, colour is correct.

  • Ask for reference from the Breeder’s vet and previous puppy owners?

  • Have the parents or any dogs in the line had any surgeries/medical issues?

  • Have you ever experienced a dog with spinal issues, IVDD, hip dysplasia, major BOAS issues, hypo trach, luxating patella, allergies and what as a breeder did you do to address this?

  • Ask to see picture of prior pups the breeder has bred? It is important to see that the quality.

  • How long have you been breeding French Bulldogs? (If only a short period of time, then who is your mentor?)

  • Will you be available to answer any questions I may have throughout the lifetime of the dog?

  • Ask if your breeder is a CKC member in good standing? These can be checked with the CKC 1-855-364-7252

  • Why do you breed French Bulldogs (or other breeds)?

  • Does pup come with pet insurance (usually 6 weeks offered by the CKC)?

  • What diet will pup come eating?

  • What type of toilet training has commenced e.g.: grass mat? Crate training?

  • Do you provide me some information to help me care of my French Bulldog?

  • Do you have a wait list and what is the process for this?

  • Will you take back the dog in the event that I am no longer able to keep him/her?
